Holly Pruning and Fertilizing

American Holly should be fertilized annually. A slow release fertilizer should be broadcast over the entire root zone in mid spring.

Grace Hybrid Holly are developed for strong structure and uniform branching to withstand the heavy snow loads of the northeast. Little or no pruning is necessary to develop plants like the 60-year-old “natural” specimens you will see when you visit Pride Nursery. However, Grace Hybrid American Holly do respond well to pruning or shearing. At Pride Nursery, you can view a 5-6′ tall hedge of Grace Hybrid Holly over 35 years old! Just remember shearing can reduce berry crop and avoid pruning summer-early fall because any growth encouraged that late may not mature enough to endure the winter without damage.
